My Go-To Ecos (Splurge Worthy Brands)
January 4, 2015

Those dirty toxins!

If you enjoyed my past blogs, I have a treat for you! I’ve discussed some great Eco brands on a budget and why they are a natural choice, then touched down on what they are free from but I know alot of people are confused about all of it. So I decided to look deeper into the three terrible toxic “P”s. So here we go..

 So what is Petroleum?

Petroleum is made from naturally occurring unprocessed crude oil and products are made up of refined crude oil.

What is the problem with Petroleum?
Petroleum is not water soluble, they can be difficult for your body to eliminate, sometimes causing buildup. The oxygen and nutrients skin needs in order to release toxins and repair itself can be blocked by the “barrier” created by petroleum cosmetics.

 So what are Parabens?

Parabens are used as preservatives. Parabens are effective preservatives in cosmetics.

What is the problem with Parabens?
Parabens are becoming increasingly controversial because they have been found in breast cancer tumors. Parabens have also displayed the ability to slightly mimic estrogen (a hormone known to play a role in the development of breast cancer).

In fact, the “Environmental Working Group” has a system used for rating the toxicity of cosmetics. They rate toxicity levels from 1 to 10(7-10 are considered High Hazard) Toxicity level rating found on http://www.ewg.org/skindeep

So what are some of the names of these toxic Parabens?
Isopropylparaben, Isobutylparaben & Butylparaben are all a 7 on EWG.

Scary right? Well sadly they is another Paraban to worry about.
Propylparaben and it is a big ol’ 10 on EWG Skin Deep Website.

So what are Phthalates?

Phthalates are mainly used as plasticizers (substances added to plastics to increase their flexibility, transparency, durability, and longevity).

What is the problem with Phthalates?
Phthalates exposure research has been focused on children and men’s health. However, women may be at higher risk for potential adverse health effects of phthalates due to an association between phthalate exposure leading to development of breast cancer.

So what are some of the names of these toxic Phthalates?
Dibutyl phthalate & Benzyl butyl phthalate which are both a 10 on EWG.

So right about now you might be a little grossed out. I know I am. So what can we do to help out our bodies? I don’t know about you but I rather not take it…I’ll just leave it. Go Eco!
